The Great Black Swamp

Today we watched a movie called the Great Black Swamp. There where many things to think about after the movie. Settlers in Northwest Ohio suffered many hardships, such as mosquitoes, swamp, and diseases. One hardship that was striking to me was the family that lost all six of their children to cholera in one week. I can't even imagine loosing all my children that way. The final thought that the script writer gave us was whether or not the Great Black Swamp had been conquered or not. What do you think? Has the Great Black Swamp been conquered or not? You decided. There are no right or wrong answers.....I look forward to reading your responses! Dorinda

  1. In my opinion, I think the swamp is conquered in a way that they can control it. The rainwater that normally over floats the area can now be drained into ditches. Furthermore, the deceases can be prevented, and/or are being treated adequately.

  2. Ronald,
I think you are right. That the swamp is controled. I don't think it is conquered though. If we didn't have the ditches, I think the swamp would return.

  3. I don't think that human can't conquer the nature such as swarm, forests, etc, forever. The standing water left in Black Swamp after heavy rain is the evidence that human can't conquer nature. We have to take care more nature than before. Unless human could be exterminated like dinosaurs.

  4. I think human can conquer Swamps. When there is a will, there is a way. Unfortunately, I did not see the movie, so I can not really debate with you guys. But I know that the human being is a hard specie and if they like something, they will do anything whiting their power to conquer it. History can tell.
