Crude Ohio

During today's class, we explored the oil and gas boom here in Northwest Ohio. It is amazing to thing that just fifty years after the settlement of Bowling Green that there was a huge oil and gas boom. Many of the large Victorian style homes in Downtown Bowling Green were built with the money from the boom. The homes built on the west side of Main street were part of the boom town that resulted from the influx of the money and need for labor during the boom. What was the most intriguing fact from the documentary? Compared to other information about oil and natural gas, which you have learned, what is the same or different? Would you have liked to have been an oil or gas prospector here in the Great Black Swamp? Why or why not?

Fort Meigs

BlockHouseSmall.jpgToday we had a marvelous day with the guide Dan who interpreted the War of 1812. We explored what it was to be like as a soldier here in the wilderness of NW Ohio. Fort Meigs was our stop of the day. Dan was our tour interpreter who did a superb job! The experience was also to educate students about war in Northwest Ohio. Today we saw a real treasure of history and were able, due to Dan's generosity, touch and hold some history. What was life like in the fort? Would you have wanted to be a soldier in the fort? Fort Map A22.jpgConsidering that Perrysburg was a thriving city at the time the Black Swamp was being settled, why would people want to settle the swamp? What was the driving force that compelled them to sacrifice so much to become farmers and businessmen in the very dangerous Black Swamp?
permission granted from Fort Meigs' staff to use their website pictures and info. Thanks Dan!

The Last of the Mohicans

During this week we will be exploring War in Northwest Ohio. In preparation for the week, we have watched The Last of the Mohicans. The movie the Last of the Mohicans is a powerful story of the struggle to survive. We use this movie to analyze what happened here in Northwest Ohio. What do you think about the alliances formed with the indigenous people and the different groups? Did these alliances ever benefit the indigenous people of the Americas? What do you think? Why or Why not?

The Great Black Swamp

Today we watched a movie called the Great Black Swamp. There where many things to think about after the movie. Settlers in Northwest Ohio suffered many hardships, such as mosquitoes, swamp, and diseases. One hardship that was striking to me was the family that lost all six of their children to cholera in one week. I can't even imagine loosing all my children that way. The final thought that the script writer gave us was whether or not the Great Black Swamp had been conquered or not. What do you think? Has the Great Black Swamp been conquered or not? You decided. There are no right or wrong answers.....I look forward to reading your responses! Dorinda
